Ivermectin is a prescription antiparasitic drug used to treat certain parasitic infections in both humans and animals. It is a broad-spectrum macrocyclic lactone derived from the bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. 

Ivermectin functions by interfering with the nerve and muscle activity of invertebrates, including parasites like worms, mites, and lice. It binds to and opens glutamate-gated chloride channels in the parasite's nerve and muscle cells.

This influx of chloride ions paralyzes and ultimately kills the parasite.

The drug is safe for mammals (at the correct therapeutic doses) because these chloride channels are not present in most mammalian cells, and the drug does not readily cross the mammalian blood-brain barrier.
